The portraits I like best usually happen just after the obvious pose: a glance away, a laugh, or a quiet second at the table.
I am usually waiting for the moment when a person stops arranging their face for the camera. Someone looks to the side, closes their eyes, starts laughing, or settles into the light that is already in the room. That small change is often the whole photograph.
Some of these are clearly posed and some are not. I am less interested in hiding that distinction than in keeping the person recognisable as themselves once the shutter is pressed.
